  • One Laptop Per Child
    7th November 2007

Tooraweenah has been used for testing of the One Laptop Per Child prototypes ... but not how you might think. What Tooraweenah has that other places don't have is open space with a relatively low level of radio noise.

What was done? Radio range testing, to see how far the radio transmissions can travel, on straight roads near the village, or on hills back to the valley. A test was done from the hill west of the aerodrome back to the turning bay in front of the school. A test was also tried from the top of Mt Naman down to Mt Terrace Rd. The best test range is on the Jack Renshaw Parkway adjacent to the property Lancelot, about 7km north of the village.

The wireless service at the technology centre was also used, though only within a few tens of metres. One unit was demonstrated to a shire councillor in the dining room of the pub, linked to the technology centre.
